Amangkurat IV (r.
1719-1725)
Naskah dalam Bahasa Indonesia belum tersedia
When Paku Buwono I passed away in 1719,
one of his sons succeeded him with the title
Amangkurat IV (r. 1719-1725). However, his
authority was challenged from the start by
several of his brothers, and Dutch
assistance was requested once again in order
to quell the rebellion. It took four years
to overcome the revolt, a period also known
as the 'Second Javanese War of Succession'.
It ended in favour of Amangkurat IV, and a
relatively peaceful period ensued.
In return for its successful involvement
in curbing the rebellion, Mataram agreed to
pay the Kumpeni regular amounts of highly
valued pepper, and wood for the maintenance
of the Dutch fleet. The VOC also obtained
sole access to the ports on Java's north
coast.
After Amangkurat IV died in 1725 he was
succeeded by his son, who was installed with
the title Paku Buwono 11 (r. 1726-49).
However, in the latter part of his reign,
from about 1740, a series of tragic events
known as the Geger Pacinan, 'Chinese
Revolt', dramatically altered the
relationship between the Kumpeni and Mataram.
