The karaton Surakarta lanscape:

  1. Alun-alun Lor. great 'nothern field' in front of the court, often used for public events and tournaments.
  2. Pagelaran. Large open pavillion in the northern part of court complex. It was and still is often used for offcial ceremonies and welcoming official guests.
  3. Sitihinggil. Grand open pavillion and audience hall south of Pagelaran. The ruler sometimes held semi-official meeting here, and entertain his guests.
  4. Bangsal Witono, an elegant, elevated open structure sometimes used as a seating area for the woman of the courth during certain ceremonies, such as Gerebeg.
  5. Stairs leading from Sitihinggil to the court's outer entrance gate, Kori kamandungan courtyard.
  6. The first inner courtyard, Srimanganti. The audience halls on the west and east side, Bangsal Smorokoto and Bangsal Marcukondo are often used for semi-official events, and as waiting areas for court officials.
  7. Songgobuwono Tower. The Songgobuwono tower served as lookout position, but also was aplace for meditation.
  8. Inner courtyard, now in use as the court's museum, but in former times as Kantor Kadipaten, the Pangeran Adipati (crown prince)'s offices.
  9. Karaton wall. The boundary of the palace.
